Correctional Contracting in CA
Locums Psychology openings are prolific across CA CDCR. Assignments are typically full time and an initial 6 month assignment can be extended or renewed without difficulty. Conversion to full time civil service for the Department is a frequent outcome.
Temporary/Relief Psychologists at Correctional facilities have inpatient and outpatient duties, and typically the more intense and more remote positions have higher rates. As always, patient care is the priority and a variety of unit types and responsibilities are available across the state. The needs are great, and candidates must have a minimum of 12 months experience. Psychologists will periodically serve as clinician-of-the-day by being available on-call. They will develop a therapeutic relationship with patient-inmates, families and caretakers, in order to enhance effective treatment delivery. Risk assessments, interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, consulting on complex cases with supervisor, treatment team members, and with CDCR institutional healthcare personnel, and other divisions within the department, selection and application of appropriate psychological assessments, will all be part of the assignment.
Because the facilities are primarily correctional in nature, credentialing falls on the vendor and the candidate. Though there is a great need, time off should generally be scheduled before or after the assignment if at all possible. Offerings across the system range in intensity and reimbursement from $102-178/hour.
Psychologists at DSH are typically W2 employees but limited contracting opportunities are available through our partners.
